2004...

Willcocks at dusk

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 18" x 24"
Comments: It's one of the very few paintings I did this summer. I am not exactly sure why but summers just don't seem to be a very attractive season to me.

Cattails

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: After that magical accident, I was eager to try again. Can you tell what painting was the source of inspiration for this one?

Winter in Toronto, Jan_23

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: I was exciting after I bought a French easel. This was my first time painting en plein air in downtown Toronto.

Edward

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 24" x 30"
Comments: Edward and I are in 3 classes together, including one Computer Science course. During the reading week while the profs were taking a break, we came to school everyday to work on our programming assignment. On Sunday, the last day of our "break", we pulled an all-nighter, and we still couldn't finish the assignment by Monday morning when it was due. Afterwards we went to our class, and then to Ed's house to paint as planned. We were at the point where we could just fall asleep if we closed our eyes, but we still managed to stay awake for lunch. After lunch, we decided the best way for Ed to model was to sleep, this way it'd be effortless for him, and I'd have a professional model who doesn't move; and best yet, when I wake him up he'll see the finished piece, just like in surgery. Ed was very professional, he fell asleep in seconds, so I could start right away. I managed to concentrate for the good first hour, and to paint a convincing likeness of him. Then I fell asleep in my chair with brushes still in my hand. When I woke up Ed was still sleeping, but I was close to a mental breakdown. So here is the finished piece, as you can see, it's a painting of 2 very different approaches in the figure and the rest of the piece.

Winter in Toronto, Feb_07

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 24" x 18"
Comments: It was really cold, and I was looking for a place to paint in my area. I walked down the Don Valley, and decided to paint by the Don River. Ice rocks found their way into my boots when I travelled through the knee high snow. The river bank was frozen, I saw animals prints everywhere. I couldn't tell what prints they were, but there were deer's because I had seen them before. It's a fascinating experience to stand among the deer prints and paint. It's a large canvas for a plein air painting, and I had to rush when my feet got frozen as my boots had been two refrigerators with ice in them after 2 hours. I had a hard time getting home because of the cramps in my toes.

Winter in Toronto, Mar_03

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: I have almost painted every possible scene in the residential area near our school. It's not that there aren't anymore places left to paint, but to set up a French easel in the middle of the narrow back lane is not something I'd like to try. So this time I had to venture far, and it took me about an hour to finally discover this place. It's an extremely visually rich area, and I loved the subtle variation in blue in this composition. Since the days are warm now, I wasn't rushing. I had my back leaning against the wall and slowly painted it.

Winter in Toronto, Feb_04

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 12" x 9"
Comments: It was a beautiful day but difficult to painting as the sun was constantly hidden by the clouds. I might come back to this scene and paint again.

Comments: It was another cloudy day - my favorite. I was interested in the simple shapes, and the disappearing distance.

Winter in Toronto, Feb_01

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: I just moved and was eager to explore the new neighborhood. This church is located on top of a small hill, with the pine tree in the foreground, both soaked in the light.

Winter in Toronto, Feb_02 <2>

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 12" x 9"
Comments: This was painted on the same day as the previous one. I'd been wanting to paint an overcast day and I was happy to paint this scene. The place was made moody by the diffuse light and subtle colours.

Winter in Toronto, Feb_01 <1>

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 12" x 9"
Comments: I was getting more and more comfortable painting en plein air with people passing by but I still prefer a location where the traffic is light. Here you can see a typical scene in the old neighborhood in downtown Toronto, where the road between houses are narrow and can only fit one car. I had to move while painting this painting because I was standing in front of someone's garage door.(He was surprised when he opened his door.)

Winter in Toronto, Mar_01 <2>

Medium: Oil on masonite
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: There is this gothic historical house(now abandoned) in the conservation park near my house. It just sits there in the vast land among the meadows.
