2005...

Under Lawrence, Sun

Medium: Oil on board
Dimensions: 16" x 20"
Comments: This is the 3rd time I have painted this place, it's never the same.

Back to the River

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 18" x 24"
Comments: Went back to the place where I painted my 2nd plein-air this Spring. Now it's all green and a very different experience. After I finished, a groundhog showed up on the other side.
Overlooking the Don River and DVP

Medium: Oil on board
Dimensions: 16" x 20"
Comments: Inspired by John Twachtman. Painted with a large flat with thin paint.

The Green Don River

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 18" x 24"
Comments: The day was actually hot, with the sun shinning everything looked greener. If you look carefully you can see a mallard landing on the water.

The Gothic House in the Conservation Park

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 16" x 20"
Comments: This is a historical building, was the house of an early settler family in Toronto. This week the sun has been generous, and you can see the green is really growing in the recent few paintings.

Overflow Pond in the Conservation Park

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: This is the Spring overflow pond in the park, which connects to the Don River. The entrance from the river can be seen in the bottom right corner of the previous painting. The top right corner of this painting is the same river entrance.

Don River along the Conservation Park

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: I changed the more trasparent palette which I have used for more than a year, to an opaque set of primaries. I found the saturation is much higher in the painting result.
Don River under DVP

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: Another attempt at this scene. The weather was changing really fast, from rainning to sunshine, to oovercast, and the iteration continued.

Portrait Commission

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 12" x 16"
Comments: This is a commission. The subject was not fully awake.

Under Lawrence (in the Rain)

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: I had a feeling that it was going to work out well before I even started painting, when I looked at it through the view finder I just knew it. I was working slower than I usually did, making sure I applied the thin transparent darks and thick opaque lights in the correct order, and not rushing to the final stage too quickly.
Under Lawrence Facing North (in the Rain)

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: Not painting from intuition but applying theories and techniques I have read or seen to the actual work, is a challenging but very exciting path to take. To actually see the theories come to life, and prove themselves true, is rewarding.

Before the Downpour

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 16" x 20"
Comments: I knew it was about to rain but the clouds were just pretty overwhelming, so I did this quick sketch. Then it did rain.

Day after the Rain

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 20" x 16"
Comments: It was chilly.

Don Valley Slope in the Rain

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: It was rainning, the colours of the tree branches and vegetation are saturated, but the rain and mist bring it back down again. A very interesting scene to paint, it's about the value, the colour, the drawing of perspective was almost non-existent.
Don River in the Rain

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: It was painted in the rain, but I was under the highway over pass so I wasn't all soaked. The spring rain made the current rapid and colour muddy.

Bank by the Golf Course

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments:

Toronto Port

Medium: Oil on Masonite board
Dimensions: 9" x 12"
Comments: I have been wanting to paint the cargo ships down at the Toronto Port. I finally had the chance today to drive down there. I had to paint behind a fense as there were hardly any empty public space to paint, while I needed to paint facing the sun to avoid direct light on the painting and palette.

A summer farmland
